An interactive meet was organized with Vetiver farmers to discuss on cultivation, processing and marketing issues on 22nd August 2019 at Nochikkadu in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu.

Vetiver has become an attractive economic option for the farmers of Nochikkadu, a small coastal village of Cuddalore, where the farmlands remain submerged for a considerable period during monsoon. More than 300 farmers are cultivating this crop on an area of about 900 acres of land, an area frequently affected by cyclones and tsunami.

A high-yielding variety of vetiver, that can tolerate submergence and salinity, was provided to farmers under CSIR Aroma Mission. A distillation unit has also been installed for the processing of aromatic crops. As a result, the farmers are obtaining a root yield of about 2.0-2.5 tons and an oil yield of about 16 kgs from an area of one acre which will yield them a profit of about 1.5-2.0 lakhs/acre annually.
