A large area of Chhattisgarh is rain-fed or has limited irrigation facilities. Crops like Lemongrass and Palmarosa were introduced over an area of 11 hectares. In the coming years, efforts would be made to introduce some shade-loving crops in natural forests. The target would be the naxal affected tribal areas experiencing low rainfall. Crops like Lemongrass, Palmarosa and Vetiver would be introduced in areas with no/limited irrigation facilities, while patchouli, a high value essential oil crop would be introduced in areas with sufficient irrigation. Also, forest, orchards and plantations would also be exploited for cultivation of patchouli, being a shade loving crop. In 2017, 105 farmers were trained on the cultivation of aromatic crops.
