An awareness program on further expansion of geranium was conducted on July 27, 2019, at Mothakambai, Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, wherein about 60 farmers from Ooty and nearby areas participated.

An effort to revive geranium in Nilgiri Hills is being made under the CSIR Aroma Mission. CSIR-CIMAP introduced high-yielding varieties like CIM Pawan and Bio 171 to replace the poor varieties and installed improved CSIR-CIMAP's stainless steel distillation units to replace the existing poor processing units. The area under cultivation which has gone down to about 5 acres has now increased to about 150 acres. It is expected that this will increase to 300 acres next year and will provide about 10 tonnes of geranium oil annually thereafter.
