CSIR-CIMAP Research Centre, Hyderabad conducted Awareness Programme on 19th February 2022 at Praharajapalem village in Pathapatnam Mandal of Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh under CSIR-Aroma Mission Phase-II project. About 50 farmers and a couple of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) from the region attended the programme conducted in association with NGO, Bapuji Rural Enlightenment and Development Society (BREDS). The Centre has distributed 1,25,000 Lemongrass slips during the rainy season to these tribal farmers and the crop is performing well in this region. The field visits were also carried out in Raiwada village, Sarvakota Mandal, Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh. These enterprising tribals, with support from a local trader, are in the process of establishing a steam distillation unit on their own. Now, looking at the success of Raiwada farmers, many other farmers from adjoining areas have also come forward and registered under the CSIR-Aroma Mission to further extend the cultivation of Lemongrass in their villages. Lemograss slips were also distributed to the prospective farmers and the Centre is planning to expand aromatic crops in the region in the coming rainy season.
