Ocimum seeds are being collected for screening of aroma-rich, essential oil bearing plant.
- A South Indian species of Ocimum has been developed as a rich source of methyl cinnamate (80-85%) which is used in the making of oriental and floral perfumes and also as an excellent fixative and blender in soap perfumes in India.
- Another variety Clocimum (Clove-scented Ocimum), a hybrid strain developed as an alternate source of clove oil, rich in eugenol (80-85%) has been developed. Currently Ocimum species are being screened for Camphor and Elimicine rich lines.
