Essential oil of Monarda citriodora has a pleasant Trachyspermum ammi (ajwain) like fragrance used in pharmaceutical, flavour and fragrance Industry. Following mass selection technique, a hyper-productive strain of Monarda citriodora cerv.ex. lag was developed and named as thymo-herb designated ac [IIIM (J) MC-2]. The major chemical constituent of this strain is thymol ranging 75-85% in its essential oil. Study of the dynamics of essential oil biosynthesis during different phenophases of Jammu Monarda and of reproductive biology of Jammu Monarda is underway.  Assessment of variability in the population of Jammu Monarda is also being studied.
