CSIR Aroma Mission launched at Majuli island of Assam for conservation and restoration of the degrading landscape due to recurring floods. An awareness cum training programme was organised at Majuli by Csir Cimap, Lucknow for selection of progressive farmers for the cultivation and processing of aromatic crops under Aroma Mission Phase-II.Dr. Prabodh Kumar Trivedi, Director, CSIR-CIMAP, Lucknow inaugurated the programme and said that Majuli may be converted into an organic cluster of aromatic crops. These crops may improve the economic condition of the farmers. Initially, Vetiver crop may be planted in flood affected areas and Lemongrass will be planted in unirrigated areas of Majuli. Vetiver can prevent soil erosion and it is also helpful in the rehabilitation of metal-polluted soils. Mentha crop will be planted in January-February when the land is vacant after the harvesting of paddy.On this occasion, Mr Irshad Ali, Agriculture Officer, Majuli also addressed the audience.
