A team from CSIR-CIMAP visited the Geranium clusters, developed under Aroma Mission, on 27th December as a part of the ongoing efforts to revive its cultivation in Nilgiri Hills where the area under cultivation declined from 1000 to 10 acres.  The high-yielding variety, CIM-Pawan, was provided to 30 farmers who are presently cultivating this on 70 acres of land which will hopefully increase to 500 acres. Along with this, an improved distillation unit was also installed in Chinna Coonoor, Ooty. Both these interventions have resulted in three times increase in essential oil yield from a unit area. Many more farmers whose forefathers were involved in Geranium cultivation have shown interest in cultivating it again.
